Review of Americana UK House Gig - taken from Americana UK

Jason McNiff - Americana UK House Gig, Liverpool - 24th June 2005 Review by Chris Stevens

Jason McNiff, performing with a complete band - bass, drums and keyboard - in the small space available they huddled together to deliver two sets of intensely simmering songs built around Jason’s excellent and quite unique guitar playing and featuring vocal performances that at times were totally spellbinding. Skinny and waif-like his songs seemed to possess him, almost too much for him to retain as his body twitched and buckled under the effort. His vocals, often delivered through gritted teeth like some sort of puppet-less ventiloquist, ranged from quiet and mournful to quietly intense and passionate. Currently completing work on a new album, they performed as a cohesive unit with a genuine empathy for each others contributions. The record promises to be a cracker.

Americana-UK review of Mean Fiddler gig 29 July 2004

Tonight is the final show of Grand Drive’s UK tour. Again, tonight, as every night Jason McNiff opens the evening armed only with an acoustic guitar & some of the finest English folk/ rock / country / whatever songs written since Richard Thompson failed to matter. Read the full review

Paste Magazine 4 star review for Nobody's Son

"The 11 tracks on Jason McNiff's Nobody's Son are subtly beautiful. Flanked by members of Grand Drive and the Hank Dogs, McNiff abandons the electric-guitar solo and cymbal crash for a more understated approach featuring a variety of acoustic arrangements and mysterious subject matter..."

'Nobody's Son' voted Best Album of 2003 by Americana UK

from Americana UK:
Americana UK Editorial Albums of 2003
"1. Jason McNiff "Nobody's Son" (Snowstorm 2003)
It was a difficult one to call, what with the strength of Bruntnell's masterpiece and all, but Jason McNiff has to be one of the most underexposed and consequently under-rated artists on the UK americana scene today. After a hookladen but meandering debut in 2001, McNiff returned this year with a collection of songs that at the very least feel warm, real and full of character; and at their best, sound like Dylan at his finest - songs like "I Remember You" and "Weeping Willows Weep" have a certain English folk feel to them, with a strangely cohesive dash of Mark Knopfler (in both the vocals and guitar work), blended with a superfluity of americana instrumentation provided by the likes of Danny and Julian from Grand Drive and Andy Hank Dog. The subject matter is varied and occasionally difficult to actually grasp, but it's a genuinely representative record of some of the best of the UK's current americana community, and in that sense alone, deserves to be listened to by far more people than have heard it thus far. As one Amazon reviewer put it, "the best ten pounds I've ever spent" - and you can't get more of a recommendation than that."
