From UNCUT - June 2006
Polish-Irish Yorkshireman Jason McNiff was bitten by wanderlust at an early
age. Having busked his way round eastern europe and Egypt in his late teens,
he wrote third LP Another Man (WONKY ATLAS) in Spain before landing a job as
a Vatican tour guide in 2004. It's suitably weathered too. Hills Of Rome, In
our Time and Pilgrims soundtrack his restless travelogue in the vein of a
post nashville skyline Dylan. But there are warm echoes of Peter Bruntnell
and Martin Stephenson in Mcniff's soft strumming, particularly on Berries.

It's the accent more than the attitude on this engaging americana album that
gives Mcniff away as an Englishman. That and the organ notes woven through
his mostly slow-to-horseback tempo songs which add a touch of Spencer
Davis(or, on the calm but grand closer, Hat, Spencer Davis in church).
McNiff's voice, attractively reedy, works even better when layered, as on
the title track, with his own harmonies.

This from The Morning Star:
A treasure (Saturday 10 June 2006) Another Man Jason McNiff (Wonky Atlas) He's a troubadour and one of the best Americana singers that we have in this country. His vocal delivery, guitar playing and lyrical content invite comparisons with Dylan at his mystic best. Frankly, anyone who purchased anything by James Blunt should be made to listen to this album to see what singer-songwriting is really about. It's his third album and, although it has less of the production values of the previous albums and there are only eight tracks weighing in at just over 30 minutes, it is his most perfectly formed album to date. The subject matters will be familiar to McNiff fans. The pilgrim is mentioned in at least three songs and there is a song about the poor foot soldier. The last two tracks, Pilgrims and Hat, with the organ swelling up in the background, are religious in their intensity. Written in various countries across Europe, you get the depressing feeling that it will take another country to recognise his talent before we wake up and realise what an underrated treasure we have in our midst.
